The person watching your cam doesn’t need any sort of special software-the Video Effects software superimposes the image into the video stream on your end. By scanning your face and looking for distinct markings that tell it where your eyes, nose, and mouth are, the cam can then superimpose silly graphics on your face. Digital cameras have problems with low light in general-what is needed is not just better sensors and software brightness, contrast, and color correction algorithms. The low-light performance of the Fusion is pretty good for a PC webcam, but it’s still not where it needs to be. There’s no magic button to enable or disable RightLight, just the same sort of low-light compensation in the advanced camera control properties we’ve seen on cams from a variety of manufacturers for some time. Using what Logitech calls “RightLight” technology (a combination of hardware and software), we’re supposed to have better color and contrast in those dark caves we call computer rooms. One of Logitech’s biggest promises with the Fusion (and a couple of its other high-end models) is that the cam deals better with low-light situations.

The software does a pretty good job of echo canceling: We never had any feedback or echo problems when using the Fusion’s mic and our desktop speakers in video conversations, but don’t expect miracles the echo cancellation isn’t going to deal with blaring music or having your speakers cranked up real high. There’s a built-in microphone as well, as there is on many of the other cams by Logitech.
